Difference between sprains and strains
A muscle relaxer Carisoprodol is used to treat stiffness and pain in muscles caused by sprains, strains and other injuries. Muscle can be injured due to the stretching of the ligament and tendon. The ligament is a strong tissue band connecting two and more bones together to make a joint, and the tendons hold the muscle to bones. Sprains and strains are injuries to the body which usually result from physical activity. A sprain occurs when the ligament or muscle is stretched. If muscle or ligament is physically torn, then the injury is considered to be more serious. When this injury involves more than one ligament, it makes that part of the body painful when moving. A strain is slightly different from a sprain and affects both tendons and muscles. This can be a tear or an overstretch.
Causes of occurrence of sprains or strains:
- Playing a sport without conditioning or warming up
- Slip or fall when you cannot regain your balance. In this case, the joints are pulled out from their usual position and the ligaments are stretched. This usually affects the wrist, knee, and ankle.
- Heavy lifting. The elbow and back are most often injured in this way.
Symptoms of injuries:
There are different symptoms and signs, depending on the level of severity of the injured muscle.
- Pain, muscle spasms,
- Possible weakness
- Reduced mobility and limited ability to move the affected muscle
- Swelling, bruising
- Inability to put any weight on the joint
- You may hear or feel a «pop» or tear in your joint
- Limited ability to move the affected joint
If the signs are not severe, they may go away after some days or a couple of weeks. If they don’t go away and are very severe, you should talk to your doctor.
The main remedy procedures for sprains and strains treatment
— Reducing the swelling, that is resting and using ice. Use an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes each time and then repeat every 2 hours for the first few days.
— Depending on the area of the injury, keeping the injured part of the body elevated above the level of your heart or compressed with bandages helps reduce the pain.
— Restoring flexibility. You must cope with the pain fear and encourage the muscle to knit back together. You may need the support of a physical therapist or the use of selective exercises to restore the normal mobility or strength. A physical therapist will help you to maximize stability of the injured joint. How quickly the pain reduces depends on the severity of the injured part of the body. Sometimes injuries will recover within weeks, and more serious injuries may take a year before full flexibility will be restored.
— Over-the-counter pain medications also can be useful.
Carisoprodol is helpful in the muscle pain treatment
Carisoprodol is quickly absorbed by the body and is used as a short-term muscle pain treatment. It relaxes the muscles and blocks pain sensation, providing extreme relief from acute painful muscles. Carisoprodol has a rapid effect and you can feel a real difference about 30 minutes after taking it. It will usually last between 2-6 hours.
It reduces the risk of spasms which can add pain or discomfort. Carisoprodol is metabolized by the liver via the isoenzyme CYP2C19and cytochrome P450. It is excreted by the kidneys. A significant proportion of carisoprodol is metabolized to meprobamate. The sedative meprobamate is addictive. This explains the abuse potential of carisoprodol. Do not use Carisoprodol for too long. Make exercises and rest to complete the cure.
